About the artist

Experience

I started painting in the late ‘60’s under the encouragement of Hugh Collins who was at that time the Art Director and contributor to Yankee Magazine and did restoration for the Boston MFA. I continued to paint off and on….mostly off until the early 90’s when I was able to devote some time to instruction and painting around Newburyport, MA area. A stroke and subsequent move to Florida interrupted my painting until a re-start around 2010. For the next decade I painted when business permitted me time to at least get paint on a canvas. Covid opened a window that allowed me to focus on being on growing as an artist,,,, a course, a dream that I continue to sail.

Technique

My style I believe can be referred to expressive realism. Most of my work overtime reflects what I know, seen, touched and lived. It is not abstract but rather the hands-on experience from being around the sea and boats that I strive to capture on the canvas. Hopefully my paintings will allow you to become part of the scene, to stand on a shore and feel the wind, the spay, smell the salt air. It’s pleasure to share this part of my life with you.

Inspiration

Much of my work is rooted in personal experiences-decades spent around the sea— as small boy fishing in Baldwin harbor, a summer job as a deckhand on a tugboat in NY, sailing in New England, exploring harbors, climbing the on rocks, watching waves pound the shore, viewing costal landscapes - sunrises and sunsets. I enjoy being able to share with you oil paintings that reflect many of my experiences. I am equally fascinated by the marshes, river streams, tidal flats, and shore side settings.
